Mt'neer football falls to Monett

The Mt. Vernon High School football team traveled to Monett on Friday, Sept. 4 and came home with a 32-27 loss to the Cubs.
 
After a scoreless first quarter, Monett exploded for 20 points in the second quarter, but the Mt'neers were able to get back seven of those points and went into the half, trailing 20-7. Mt. Vernon answered with 14 points in the third quarter, while holding Monett scoreless, to take a 21-20 lead into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter, Mt. Vernon was able to add six points to their total, but the Cubs tacked on 12 points for the five-point victory.
 
The Mt'neers got 256 yards passing with two touchdowns as a team and rushed for 82 yards and touchdown in the game.
 
“Another tough loss for our boys,” said Head Coach Tom Cox. “We were flagged for 28 penalties, and we watched as the refs marked off 250 yards that were difficult to swallow. That sets an All-Time record for infractions. We are back to work with Aurora coming to town this week for Senior night.”
 
The Mt'neers are 0-2 on the season and will host Aurora on Friday night. With the loss, Mt. Vernon is now fifth in the Class 3, District 6 standings with 25.5 points. Cassville leads the district with 53 points, followed by; Nevada (44 points), Seneca (37.5 points), Reeds Spring (34 points), Mt. Vernon and Aurora and Hollister (17 points).
 
 
Volleyball
The Lady Mt'neers volleyball team traveled top Pittsburgh, Kan. on Thursday, Sept. 3 and lost to Webb City in two sets, 15-25 and 23-25.
 
On Tuesday, Sept. 1, Mt. Vernon traveled to Springfield Catholic and defeated the Lady Irish in three sets, 25-18, 25-20 and 26-24.
 
Ruth Fish led with 21 assists, Ziah Schmutz had 16 kills, and 12 assists and Clare Hale led with 10 digs.
 
“We showed a lot of maturity to close out the deciding set in both the junior varsity and varsity matches,” said Head Coach Bridgett Schmutz. “It's always good to go on the road and pick up a win.” 
 
The Lady Mt'neers are 6-5 on the season and were scheduled to host Carl Junction last night and Clever tomorrow night before heading to the West Plains Showdown on Saturday.
