Monett city clerk resigns, move leaves succession initially unclear

In a surprise move, Monett City Clerk Kelley McMillan submitted her resignation, effective July 2. No reason for the action was listed in the announcement from the city. 

According to her letter, McMillan stated, “I feel fortunate that I have been able to serve the community I was born and raised in for the past seven years. However, I am looking forward to starting this new chapter.”

McMillan was appointed city clerk in April 2024. Prior to that she worked as a part-time dispatcher for the Monett Police Department in 2019, taking on a full-time post that July. She was subsequently appointed deputy city clerk and director of emergency management in August 2022. 

McMillan is still president of the Monett Area Chamber of Commerce. 

In the past, city leaders have promoted a deputy clerk in lieu of a vacancy.
