Missouri residents who are about to renew their driver’s licenses or non-driver identification cards may apply for a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or identification card beginning on Monday, March 25.
REAL ID driver’s licenses and non-driver identification cards are compliant with the REAL ID Act of 2005 and are acceptable identification for boarding domestic flights and entering nuclear power plants and federal facilities such as courthouses and military bases. They can be distinguished from Missouri identification cards by a gold star found on the upper-right corner.
According to information found on the Missouri Department of Revenue’s website, the REAL ID Act establishes “minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses and ID cards and prohibits federal agencies from accepting for official purposes driver licenses and ID cards from states that do not meet these standards.” The Missouri Department of Revenue is on track to meet these requirements this year.
The REAL ID cards, or other acceptable forms of identifications, such as a United States passport or a passport card, will be required to enter federal facilities or board domestic flights beginning Oct. 1, 2020. Missouri residents who wish to obtain a card may do so at any Missouri drivers license office beginning on March 25.
To obtain a REAL ID card, residents will need to present valid, original documents at the time they apply which demonstrates proof of the following: identity, lawful residence in the United States, Social Security number, and Missouri residence. Two documents must be provided to prove residence in the state, only one document is needed for the rest. For Missouri residents whose names and date of birth differ from their identification document, additional items may be required.
For those who are applying for a REAL ID card when renewing their driver’s license or Missouri ID cards, there is no additional fee, but those applying for a REAL ID card should expect to wait 10 to 15 days before receiving it.
There is no requirement for Missouri residents to apply for a REAL ID card, and REAL ID cards are not required for driving, voting or registering to vote, age verification or state purposes.
