Gary Leon Gunter

Gary Leon Gunter, 85, of Pierce City,passed away Jan. 27, 2020 at his home in Pierce City. Gunter was born in Scandia, Kan. Dec. 10, 1934. He was the son of Parley and Thelma (Howell) Gunter. He graduated from Pierce City High School in 1953. He attended a year of college at SMS in Springfield. He was married to Phyllis Palmer June 15, 1957 in Pierce City. He spent over 39 years in the Army where he was a master sergeant. During his years in the Army, he traveled to Korea and was later in the National Guard. In 1962, Gunter was presented a Missouri National Guard award for outstanding achievement by the St. Louis Post Dispatch. He was a member of the Sportsman Club where he served on the board. He was a member of the Pierce City First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are the following: his wife; sons, Mark Gunter of Nixa and Gary Gunter of Monett; daughter, Michel Garman of Pierce City; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Greg Gunter.
Funeral services were held at Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City, Jan. 31, 2020. Burial followed at Pierce City Cemetery with full Military Honors. Arrangements were under the personal care and direction of Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City. Memorials may be made to Pierce City Public Library in care of the funeral home.
