Head of Early Learning promoted by district
Natalie Woodbury has been named the new elementary principal in Mt. Vernon.
Woodbury succeeds Christina West, who was named as the district’s new superintendent.
Following two years as a teacher in the Miller school district, Woodbury came to Mt. Vernon in 2014 and served as a sixth grade teacher for eight years. In 2022 she became director of Early Learning.
“I am so grateful for this opportunity and know I have big shoes to fill,” Woodbury said. “I’m taking time to learn about the elementary school with its values and goals. During the summer, I plan to meet with staff, listening to their experiences and insights, and reflecting on how I can best support their work. I’m also staying grounded in research-based leadership practices and connecting with mentors and peers who challenge me to grow. With this preparation, I hope to show my heart, humility, and a willingness to keep learning.”
Woodbury praised her predecessor’s efforts developing a strong culture for the elementary school.
“Mrs. West has created a great culture and team at the Elementary,” she said. “My goal is to continue to create an environment where teachers feel supported and valued. I hope to help them grow not just as educators, but as leaders in our school community.
“I believe the most important skill for an elementary principal is the ability to build strong and trusting relationships with students, staff, families, and the community. Everything we do in education stems from connection and communication. When people feel seen, heard, and supported, they’re more open to growth and learning. A strong leader sets a positive tone and models what it means to lead with a consistent vision.”
Woodbury earned a bachelor of science degree from Missouri State University and a master’s degree in school administration from Lindenwood University in 2016. She has a vision for how she wants students to experience their first years in school.
“I want students to look back on their elementary years as a time when they felt safe, loved, and excited to learn. I hope they remember the joy of discovery, the kindness of their teachers, and the friendships they built. Most importantly, I want them to leave the elementary school feeling confident and ready to take on whatever comes next, knowing they mattered at the elementary school,” she added.
