Aurora residents who are interested in running for school board can file starting on Tuesday, Dec. 11. The window for filing will remain open until Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019.
According to the unofficial minutes of the Aurora School Board meeting on Nov. 5, two seats will be open due to the expiration of the terms of Chantil Miller, the board delegate for the Missouri School Board Association, and Steve McCulloch.
Aurora Superintendent Dr. Billy Redus said he didn’t know yet if Miller and McCulloch would run for re-election to the board.
“I encourage all members to continue to run because of the knowledge they have accumulated by being on the board,” he said. “However, I also encourage any parent or patron in the district to run because it is the community’s school.”
According to the Aurora School Board’s policy, candidates for the school board must be United States citizens and resident taxpayers of the Aurora R-8 School District who are at least 24 years old. They cannot be convicted of any felonies, must not be registered sex offenders, and must have lived in the state of Missouri for at least one year.
They must also not be delinquent in any state, municipal tax, personal property tax or real property taxes, or if they are or were a corporate officer of any fee office, that office cannot be delinquent on any taxes paid to the state. Candidates must also file all required financial disclosure reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission, where applicable, for all previous election in which they were candidates. Beyond those requirements, Redus said excellent school board members are good listeners who are unafraid to share their opinions, desire to work towards consensus, respect confidentiality, are able to disagree amicably, and most importantly, want students to be served in an effective manner.
Redus also said board members need to be team players.
“I would recommend to people to keep in mind that they are only one member of a seven-member board,” he said. “While they may have great ideas, it takes a majority of the board for implementation.”
Redus also thanked all Aurora school board members, both current and past, for their service to the students.
“I appreciate the hard work of our current board members, and those who have served in the past,” he said. “They have worked in conjunction with teachers and staff to make Aurora R-VIII a wonderful district. I would also encourage anyone thinking of running for the board to do so.”
