Strutting on the square

Lawrence County Commissioner David Botts, left, announces the conditional pardon of human turkey Lindsey Shepard, who was there in the stead of the actual turkey. The lone condition of the pardon was that Shepard had to gobble for the crowd. She complied, belting out a gobble that would impress most turkey hunters. (Photos by Ryan Squibb)

Nearly 200 brave inclement weather to strut around Mt. Vernon on turkey day
The 2019 Mountaineer Turkey Strut, held Thanksgiving morning in Mt. Vernon, was well supported by the community if not by Mother Nature. A total of 287 participants registered for the 5K, although thanks to the dreary wet weather, only 186 showed. Just prior to the beginning of the event, the street lights around the Lawrence County Courthouse ominously turned on, silently announcing the incoming rain.
