A Mt. Vernon family was hit with a severe hardship just a week before Christmas. Travis and Krystal Weaver lost the house they live in with their two children, Kennley, 16, and Ty, 13, on Thursday, Dec. 19. The home is located on the east side of Mt. Vernon
An investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, said Carrie Martin, Travis Weaver’s sister-in-law, but the suspected hotspot is an outlet where a laptop was plugged in.
All four members of the family made it out of the house but had to go to the emergency room to be treated for smoke inhalation. Martin said both Travis and Ty also received stitches from injuries they received in the fire. Currently, the family is staying with a relative.
The Weaver family lost all of their possessions in the fire, Martin said.
“They lost all of their Christmas, obviously; everything for the kids,” she said. “They lost all their sports stuff, they lost everything. And, they didn’t have insurance coverage for the contents, so none of that is being replaced by insurance.”
Efforts are underway to help the Weavers. Country Junction, east of Mt. Vernon, is taking up cash donations for the family at their location at 19032 Highway 174. Martin has also organized a Go Fund Me page for the family, entitled “Mt. Vernon family loses everything to a house fire.” As of press time, it had raised $1,645 towards a $6,000 goal.
Martin encourages anyone who can help to do so, no matter how small of an amount they might have to give.
“Any donation helps,” she said. “Obviously, there’s not anything that’s going to replace the stuff that they had or the memories that they had, or their pictures and photos and stuff like that, but then, if people are like, ‘I’m not going to give $5 because I don’t think that’s enough,’ that $5 helps; anything helps.”
