Mt’neers KO Fighting Irish, 40-0, on homecoming night

The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers defeated Springfield Catholic’s Fighting Irish, 40-0, during their homecoming game at Mt’neer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 29. It was the team’s fifth victory of the season, as well as their second shut-out win.
The Mt’neers drew first blood in the game when Braden Dodson made a three-yard touchdown run near the end of the first quarter, capping off an 81-yard offensive drive. An attempt at a PAT was unsuccessful, making the score 6-0 at the end of the first.
The Mt’neers scored their second touchdown at the top of the second quarter when Dodson made a four-yard touchdown run. The Mt’neers then successfully completed a two-point conversion to make the score 14-0 at the end of the half.
The Mt’neers gained their third touchdown near the beginning of the third quarter when Hunter Conway made a 14-yard touchdown run. An attempt at a PAT was unsuccessful, making the score 20-0 at the end of third quarter.
The team scored their fourth touchdown midway through fourth quarter when Gavin Johnston completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Schnelten. An attempted PAT was unsuccessful, making the score 26-0.
Near the end of the quarter, the Mt’neers forced Springfield Catholic to punt on downs, but Schnelten blocked their punt, keeping the ball near the Fighting Irish’s goal line. Two plays later, Hunter Conway ran the ball into the end zone for the team’s fifth touchdown. Landon Popa then followed up with a successful PAT, making the score 33-0.
The Mt’neers made their sixth and final touchdown in the last two minutes of the game after Calvin Dawson recovered a fumble from Springfield Catholic while they were on their second down, putting the Mt’neers on the Fighting Irish’s six-yard line. From there, Preston Hardyman followed up with a touchdown run. Popa again followed up with a successful PAT to make the final score 40-0.
This Friday, the Mt’neers travel to Hollister, where they will face the Tigers.
