Mt. Vernon looks to Nevada territory this Friday
The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers won their fourth consecutive victory of the football season when they faced off with the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats during an away game at Rogersville on Friday, Sept. 15.
The Mt’neers drew first blood almost immediately after the start of the game when Gavin Johnston completed a 79-yard touchdown pass to Ryder Dampf on the second down of the game. Landon Popa followed up with a successful PAT to make the score 7-0.
Rogersville got on the board about midway through first quarter when they made their own touchdown, but an attempt at a PAT fell short, leaving the score 7-6 at the end of the quarter.
The Mt’neers widened their lead at the top of the second quarter when Braden Dodson capped off their offensive drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Popa again followed up with a successful PAT, making the score 14-6. However, the Wildcats evened up the score at the end of the third quarter when they made their second touchdown of the night and followed up with a two-point conversion to make the score 14-all at the end of the quarter.
The impasse between the two teams continued well into the fourth quarter until, with only about a minute and thirty-six seconds left on the clock and the Mt'neers on a fourth and eight, Johnston completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Dampf. Popa again followed up a successful PAT to make the score 21-14.
Now on offense, the Wildcats sought to make a touchdown of their own, but their drive came to an end when Grayson Gann intercepted the ball, and the game ended in a Mt’neer victory.
The Mt’neers travel to Nevada on Friday, Sept. 22, where they will face the Tigers.
