Mt’neers collar Houn’ Dawgs, 38-0, in rivalry shutout

Mt. Vernon keeps coveted Bell Bowl Trophy following lopsided game, Lady Mt'neers softball team honored at half time
The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers won their third victory of the 2023 football season when they soundly defeated their longtime rivals, the Aurora Houn’ Dawgs in the Bell Bowl game at Mt’neer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 8. With their latest win, the team retains possession of the Bell Bowl Trophy for another year.
The Mt’neers drew first blood when Gavin Johnston completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Ryder Dampf. Landon Popa followed up with a successful PAT to make the score 7-0.
The Mt’neers scored their second touchdown near the top of the second quarter when Johnston capped off a powerful offensive drive with a quarterback keeper, running 10 yards into the end zone. Again, Popa followed up with a PAT to make the score 14-0.
With about three-and-a-half minutes of play time remaining in the half, the Mt’neers’ defense drove the Houn’ Dawgs offense back into their own end zone, after which the Mt’neers tackled Aurora’s quarterback, giving Mt. Vernon a safety and two points for a score of 16-0.
Back on offense, the Mt’neers gained their third touchdown in the final seconds of the half when Johnston completed another touchdown pass to Dampf. The Mt’neers then made a two-point conversion when Braden Dodson took the ball into the end zone, making the final score 24-0 at the end of the half.
The Mt’neers continued to build up their lead near the top of the third quarter when Johnston completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Dampf, who ran the ball into the end zone. Popa kicked the ball over the goal post for a third time that evening to make the score 31-0.
The Mt’neers final touchdown came about midway through the quarter when Jake Leeper intercepted a ball from the Houn’ Dawgs, putting the Mt’neers on offense on Mt. Vernon’s 29-yard line. Then, evading the Houn’ Dawgs defense, Dodson made a 71-yard touchdown run to score six points. Popa again made a successful PAT to make the final score 38-0. It was the Mt’neers first shutout victory in a Bell Bowl game since they defeated the Houn’ Dawgs in 2018 with a score of 28-0.
This week, the Mt’neers travel to Rogersville, where they will face the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats.
