Monett High School’s Smith signs letter to run track at University of Central Missouri

On Monday, Feb. 24, Monett High School senior Vayla Smith signed her national letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic track career as a Jennie at the University of Central Missouri. She plans to major in Psychology and hopes to one day become a Clinical Psychologist.
This year was her fourth year as a member of the Cubs varsity track team and her fifth year competing. Over the last  four years of high school track she has been a two time conference and district champion in the 400m and last year she was part of the 4x200m relay team that secured a spot at the state level. Additionally, she received All-State recognition in the 400m during her sophomore season. She also set the record in the 400m with a time of 58:98 and the  4x200m relay team set the record with a time of 1:47:00.
Along with track, she also plays basketball, is secretary of National Honor Society and is a member of Student Council and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA); all while maintaining a 3.86 GPA.
Vayla said, “I chose UCM because I was impressed by the campus atmosphere and dynamic culture at UCM, along with the great facilities that reflect the school’s commitment to supporting and prioritizing its athletes.”
When asked about how she feels about continuing at the next level she said, “I am particularly excited to be surrounded by athletes who share my dedication to track and field, as well as the ooportunity to unlock my full potential in a competitive and supportive environment.”
Monett Cubs head girls track coach Kelly George said, “Vayla is a multi-sport athlete who has qualified for the Class 4 state track meet in the 400m all three years. She has big goals and high aspirations this year and I am excited to watch her finish her high school career. Vayla signing to continue her education and track career at UCM is exciting for our team and school. We are excited to watch her finish her senior season on the track but also to follow her as she competes at the next level. I know Vayla is excited about this season and I know a great finish to her high school career would be a place on the podium at the state track meet this year. I am very proud of Vayla and her dedication to our program really means so much to me and our team.”
