Lady Mt’neers softball win four games last week, Mt. Vernon baseball starts season 2-0

The Mt. Vernon High School softball team was very busy last week, playing five games, winning four of them.

 

On Saturday, March 21 the Lady Mt’neers traveled to Mountain Grove to take on Hartville and Mountain Grove. Mt. Vernon would fall to Hartville, 16-14 but defeat Mountain Grove 17-0.

 

The Lady Mt’neers would jump out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, but the Lady Eagles would answer back with five runs in the top of the second inning and three runs in the top of the third inning to take an 8-4 lead. Mt. Vernon answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and s single run in the bottom of the fourth inning to close the gap to 8-7. An eight-run sixth inning would give Hartville a 16-7 lead. The Lady Mt’neers would not go away quietly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 16-10. Mount Vernon added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but would fall two runs short in their comeback bid.

 

Ellie Eddington was 1-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs, Hailey Stewart went 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs and Lilly Burk finished the game 1-5 with a run scored and two RBIs.

 

A 12-run first inning pretty much ended the game against Mountain Grove. The Lady Mt’neers added a single run in the second inning and four runs in the fourth inning to complete their scoring.

 

Eddington went 3-3 with a two home runs, three runs scored and five RBIs, Hailey Stewart was 1-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Jocelyn Liss finished the game 2-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Emily Schubert got the win, going three innings, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and eight strikeouts.

 

On Friday, March 20, Mt. Vernon traveled to Ava and defeated Plato, 17-12 and host Ava 14-1.

 

Both teams scored a single run in the first inning and two runs each in the second inning to be tied 3-3 heading into the third inning. In the third, the Lady Mt’neers scored five runs to take an 8-3 lead. The Lady Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 8-4. Mt. Vernon scored four more times in the top of the fourth inning to take a 13-4 lead. After scoring a run in the fifth inning to lead 13-4, Plato answered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the score to 13-12. A four-run sixth inning put the game out of reach for Plato and Mount Vernon got the win.

 

Kenzie Tomsitz went 2-4 with a run scored and four RBIs, Eddington was 3-5 with three doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs, Adi Williams went 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs and Lisa Stewart finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

 

On Thursday, March 19, the Lady Mt’neers began their 2026 season with a home win over Stockton, 11-1.

 

The Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but the Lady Mt’neers scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to walk the game off.

 

Burk was 2-2 with a triple, a double, a run scored and two RBIs, Vanessa Rutherford went 1-4 with two RBIs, AJ Shipman was 4-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Williams went 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Tomsitz was 2-4 with an RBI and Hailey Stewart finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored. Schubert got the win, going six innings, allowing one run on one hit with 13 strikeouts.

 

Baseball

 

Mt. Vernon is 4-1 on the season and were scheduled to host the Mt. Vernon Tournament from Monday until today and then host Purdy this Friday.

 

The Mt. Vernon baseball team headed to Stockton on Saturday to play on the Stockton Tournament.

 

The Mt’neers defeated Stockton in the opening round game 4-0 before knocking off Skyline, 11-8 in the semifinals.

 

Mt. Vernon led 3-0 after the top pf the first inning, but the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the inning and three runs in the second inning to take a 5-3 lead. Two more runs by Stockton in the fourth inning increased their lead to 7-3. The Mt’neers scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 7-5. A six-run sixth inning saw Mt. Vernon take a 11-7 lead late in the game. Skyline added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

 

The Mt’neers are 2-0 on the season and were scheduled to play Licking in the championship game of the Stockton Tournament on Monday before heading to Cassville to play in the Cassville/Seneca Tournament from tomorrow through Saturday.
