Lady Mt’neers softball seeded first in district tournament, Mt. Vernon baseball knocks off Monett

The Class 2, second ranked Lady Mt’neers hosted Frontenac, KS on Friday, May 1 and defeated the Lady Raiders 4-3.

 

Mt. Vernon got on the board first, scoring in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Elli Eddington hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Lady Mt’neers a 3-0 lead. Frontenac answered back with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hailey Stewart hit a solid single to center field to drive in AJ Shipman with the game winning run.

 

Eddington went 1-3 with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs, Lisa Stewart was 1-3 with a triple and Hailey Stewart finished the game 2-3 with an RBI.

 

The Lady Mt’neers hosted Lighthouse SR. High on Thursday, April 30 and made quick work of the Lady Chargers defeating them 15-0 in three innings.

 

Mt. Vernon scored 10 runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning to win the game easily.

 

Lilly Burk went 2-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs, Emily Schubert was 3-3 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs, Hailey Stewart went 1-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, Jocelyn Liss was 1-1 with three RBIs and Mary Fields finished the game 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

 

The Lady Mt’neers began their week by hosting Clever on Wednesday, April 29 and defeated the Lady Jays 11-1.

 

Clever jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead and that was it for them, as the Lady Mt’neers wo0uld hold them scoreless the rest of the game. Mt. Vernon would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning and six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cruise to victory.

 

Eddington was 1-3 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI and Shipman went 2-4 with two RBIs. Schubert got the win, going six innings, allowing one unearned run on no hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

 

Mt. Vernon is 24-5 on the season and were scheduled to play against Reeds Spring on Monday before ending the regular season at home against Class 2, top ranked Skyline last night. The Lady Mt’neers are the top seed in the Class 2, District 6 tournament at Sarcoxie and were scheduled to play Southwest (Washburn) tomorrow night.

After the Lady Mt’neers, Class 2, third ranked East Newton is seeded second, followed by Class 2, fourth ranked Diamond, Class 2, ninth ranked Miller, Lamar, Pierce City, Sarcoxie and Southwest (Washburn). The tournament starts tomorrow night, with the semifinals being played on Monday, May 11 and the championship game set for Tuesday, May 12.

 

Baseball

 

The Mt’neers baseball team traveled to Monett on Thursday and came home with a 3-1 win over the Cubs.

 

Monett led 1-0 after the fourth inning, but Mt. Vernon would find their offense in the sixth inning as Jaden Sexton doubled to right field to drive in Jackson Hood and Jax Evans to take a 2-1 lead in the game. In the top of the seventh inning, Hood singled to left field to drive in Evans to secure the win.

 

Hood was 2-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, Sexton went 1-4 with a double and two RBIs and Brody Wilmoth got the win, going seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

 

The Mt’neers started their week by traveling to Lamar on Tuesday, April 28 but lost to the Tigers, 7-2.

 

Lamar led 2-0 after the first inning and increased that lead by scoring a run in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning to go up 6-0. Mt. Vernon got a run back in the top of the sixth inning, but Lamar answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Mt’neers scored their final run in the top of the seventh inning.

 

Zerrik Pham was 1-3 in the game with an RBI.

 

Mt. Vernon is now 9-12 on the season and were scheduled to play against Buffalo on Monday, East Newton last night and Hollister tomorrow night before heading to Marionville on Friday night.
