Daniel Caddick, a homeless man frequently around Lawrence County, has been arrested for possession charges following a text message that implicated his guilt.
Caddick has a large criminal history according to court documents, mostly in the city of Aurora, including multiple drug charges. He would add another to the total, but this time in Mt. Vernon.
On Aug. 16, Caddick was riding as a passenger in another’s vehicle when the driver was pulled over for what was, at first, an everyday traffic stop.
Caddick and the driver were pulled over for failure to maintain lane. Following this, Daryck Wheeler with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office caught a glimpse of Caddick’s phone in plain sight according to the probable cause statement. On the screen of the phone were messages from a third party to Caddick asking if “Danny” had any “drugs,” with Caddick’s response reading “no” and “he can get some now.”
Search gleans goods
In the ensuing search of Caddick’s vehicle, Wheeler discovered a glass pipe with white residue in addition to a large amount of clear plastic bags and another pipe in Caddick’s seat. He also discovered a sunglasses case on Caddick’s person containing a clear plastic bag filled with a white crystalline substance, which field tested positive for methamphetamine.
During this altercation, Caddick’s phone buzzed again, with the third party this time messaging to ask if they were pulled over. At which point Wheeler observed who he believed to be the subject in the area.
Charges filed
Caddick has been charged with delivery of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana or synthetic cannabinoid and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. The first of these charges is a class C felony, and the second, a class D.
Caddick was set to appear at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, for arraignment. He is currently defended by Nathan Dawson, Special Public Defender.
