The Lawrence County Commission held a public meeting with Geronimo Power, an energy company out of Minnesota, on Monday, March 30. At the meeting, the group from Geronimo and the commission discussed the possibility of a large solar farm spanning 640 acres, just one piece of a total 2,041-acre solar farm across Jasper and Lawrence counties, according to project lead Mark Jones. The farm is planned to provide some of the power needed for a data center being built near La Russell. The meeting was primarily informational, as Geronimo does not need the commission’s permission to move forward with their plans.

An estimated 40 people were in attendance for the meeting that had to be relocated to the Lawrence County Health Department building in order to accommodate the turn out. Also in attendance was State Senator Mike Moon, who also fielded a few questions from the crowd. The crowd largely disagreed with the prospect of a solar farm being built in Lawrence County and made their grievances known after the representatives from Geronimo departed. (Photos by Ethan Gray)
