Sergeant Melissa Phillips, a member of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office’s detective division, was named the LCSO’s first-ever Detective of the Year on Tuesday, March 16. Phillips was chosen for the honor based on a peer-review of the detectives. As a result of being named detective of the year, Phillips’ name was placed on a plaque that will be displayed at the sheriff’s office, and she was also presented with a certificate. Lawrence County Sheriff Brad DeLay credited Lt. Chris Berry with creating the recognition, and said he hoped to see it duplicated in the other departments.
DeLay also said the accomplishment was a way to honor members of the sheriff’s office for work they do that otherwise goes unrecognized.
“As law enforcement officers, you don’t get the thanks you deserve for a lot of the things you do,” he said. “We go unseen a lot of times; we deal with things other people cannot even imagine dealing with.”
