The Mt. Vernon Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance during a meeting Tuesday, April 27, authorizing the sale of two acres of land to the Lawrence County Emergency Services Board (LCESD).
According to the terms of the contract, the city will sell the two-acre parcel of land, formerly occupied by Daniel Trucking/New Rising Fenix, to the LCESD for $1. The LCESD is required to present plans to the city for improving the property within three years.

The board approved some expenditures during the meeting. One was a payment of $5,000 to treat a termite infestation in the old part of the MARC. City Administrator Max Springer said the old chapel and kitchen area of the MARC had been treated for termites at a cost of $2,000; the $5,000 would pay for treating the rest of the building.
The board also approved the purchase of a street broom attachment that could be operated on one of the city’s backhoes at a cost of $8,456. Springer said that the attachment would help the city in cleaning up certain areas.
Finally, the board approved changes to the Hayward Drive Project, at a cost of $5,000. Springer said some of the changes included raising the road by about a foot to help with stormwater runoff and combining four culverts crossing Hayward Drive into one box culvert, which Springer said will help move storm water out quicker.
While presenting his report to the board, Springer also requested a change in the operating hours of the city pool during summer school; Springer asked that the pool be open from 2:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. instead of from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.; the board approved the change.
Springer also told the board that construction on the new skate park was expected to begin on Monday, May 3, and if the weather holds, could be completed in about three weeks.
