On Friday, jan. 6, 19 Mt. Vernon Middle School band students raveled to Joplin to audition for the SWMMEA Junior High Honor Band. The audition consisted of memorized scales, and two to three "etudes" or musical excerpts.

Mt. Vernon High School senior, Harley Daniels’ artwork titled “Apple Butter Makin’ Days” was recently selected to be published in the 2023 Edition of the Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA) Coloring Book entititled “MAEA Coloring Book 3rd Edition: Missouri Hometown Pride.”

On Dec. 17, several 4-H clubs members across Lawrence County joined forces and spent their day placing 1800 wreaths on the headstones of fallen soldiers at the Springfield National Cemetery.

After a 39-year career, Mt. Vernon attorney Randee Stemmons has retired from her law practice. Her last official day on the job was on Friday, Dec. 30.

The Mt. Vernon High School Art Club spent the semester adding holiday cheer to the businesses around town. Painting the businesses windows around town is their main fund-raiser.

On Dec. 15, the Mt. Vernon School Board had the opportunity to recognize Kendall Rutledge for achieving a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship through the U.S. Department of Labor. This is a nationally recognized credential requiring over 2,000 hours of participation to earn.
