An Aurora man was arrested and booked into the Barry County Jail after he allegedly robbed a convenience store. Jonathan David Worthington, 38, was booked into the jail on Thursday, Jan. 5. He faces charges of robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a weapon.
According to the probable cause statement in the case, on Jan. 5, an employee of the Wheaton Fastrip reported to the Wheaton Police Department that a man came into the business, pointed a firearm at him and demanded money. The employee stated that he gave the man the money in the store’s cash register, which was about $211.
A woman who was with Worthington at the time of the armed robbery (she is not being identified as she was not charged in the case as of press time) stated that Worthington went into the store to get money; she said that Worthington pointed a gun at the clerk and took money from the store. She also said that they pulled into the store’s parking lot once and then left south on State Highway 86, and then to Highway W before returning to the convenience store, where the woman said he then committed the robbery. She also filled out a statement to that effect. Footage from video surveillance at the store matched the woman’s account of the alleged robbery.
According to the probable cause statement, Worthington also owns a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta which matched the suspect vehicle in the store’s video footage; this vehicle was located at the residence where the woman’s mother lives, in Verona. It was unclear as of press time time how Worthington or the woman were located.
It was also mentioned in the probable cause statement that Wormington has a prior conviction for felony domestic violence in California and was on parole at the time of the alleged robbery. As such, he is legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.
As of press time, Worthington remained in custody in the Barry County Jail. He is next scheduled to be in court on Thursday, Jan. 12, for a bond appearance hearing.
