Three Aurora residents have been charged with institutional vandalism for allegedly vandalizing about 50 headstones in Lee Cemetery in Verona on Friday, May 31. According to probable cause statements filed by an investigator with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Curtis M. Board, 18, Holden Ray Davenport, 17, and Matthew Scott Levan, 17, allegedly damaged the headstones by pushing them over by hand.
In the probable cause statements, the investigator cited a report by an Aurora police officer who received a tip about the three. In an interview with the officer, Davenport, according to the statement, stated that Levan and Board asked him to push over a “tower-style headstone that was extremely heavy.” The report also stated that “during the damage, all three of the boys were consuming alcoholic beverages.”
Levan and Board are also accused of damaging Aurora city property at the Aurora city pool with another individual, Kyler Allen Lamastus, 19, also of Aurora, on Sunday, June 2. According to probable cause statements filed in that case, the investigating officer was informed that Board stated he and two others entered the pool area by crawling over the fence and damaged the large pool inflatable play pad, valued at $5,700.
The officer stated she interviewed Board, who admitted to entering the pool area with Levan and Lamastus at around 11 p.m. on June 2. He told the officer that the three of them damaged the play pad, and stated that Levan and Lamastus cut the play pad in several places. Lamastus, Board and Levan have all been charged with first-degree trespassing and first-degree property damage for their alleged actions at the Aurora City Pool.
Levan, Lamastus, Board and Davenport were all taken into custody on Tuesday, June 11. According to online records, Lamastus was released on Thursday, June 13, after posting a $5,000 surety bond.
