Three people are currently out on bail after they were arrested and charged with second-degree burglary and theft of items worth $750 or more. Kevin Totty, Melissa Starr and Nicholas Moore were arrested on Tuesday, May 7, after they were caught allegedly stealing items from a trailer by the property owners.
The deputy sheriff investigating the case arrived at the property where he spoke to the property owners; Totty was also present.
According to the probable cause statement, the deputy detained Totty and placed him in the patrol vehicle; he then asked other deputies present to locate a man and woman who had been on the property with Totty. He then went to speak to the property owners again. One of the property owners told the deputy that he and the other property owners arrived that day and found Totty and another man inside the trailer handing items out to a woman, and found items piled on the driveway which had not been there the night before. The property owners said there was a brief confrontation, then the other man and the woman left. He also described the value of items piled on the driveway as about $1,000. There was also an engine-rod resizing tool worth $600 and a set of low gears on the window of the trailer worth $200.
The deputy spoke with the other property owners who described what they saw when they arrived and the people who left.
The deputy also spoke with Totty, who said he’d heard a woman had lived at the trailer but had disappeared without a trace. The deputy asked him why he was there; he said he was there to check out the history of the property. He also told the deputy that Moore and Starr had been there with him, though he had some trouble remembering Moore’s last name.
One of the other deputies radioed to state he had located Moore and Starr; the deputy advised him to place them both under arrest and transport them to Lawrence County Jail. He then informed Totty that he was also under arrest and transported him to the Lawrence County Jail to be placed on an investigative hold.
According to online records, charges of second-degree burglary and theft of items worth more than $750 were filed against all three; they were released from the Lawrence County Jail on Wednesday, May 9. Bond was $1 for each of them. All three are due back in court on Monday, June 17.
