An April election postponement thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic has led state and local authorities to a June 2, 2020, election—this coming Tuesday. The following are profiles of candidates for city government seats and local school board positions.
Mayoral Candidate
JASON HAYMES
Age: 58

Why should someone vote for you?
I believe that government should serve the needs of our community with minimal intrusion in your life. I have served on the Mount Vernon Board of Aldermen for the past seven years and I want to continue that service as mayor. We have lived here since August 1992 and all of our four children are MVHS graduates. Mount Vernon has been a great hometown. As mayor, I will provide professional leadership to our board and our city. I am proud of our city and will strive to maintain our positive image and continue to encourage the wise use of our resources.
Mayoral Candidate:
RANDY SHORT
Age: 64
Education: Mt. Vernon High School
Occupation: Retired – Former small business owner for 35 years
Why should someone vote for you:
I am running for mayor to give our community a greater voice in the decisions being made in our town. I will bring more accountability and transparency to the big issues we face that will determine the future of Mt. Vernon for years to come. As mayor I will:
1.) Bring together local small business owners and work to incentivize Mountaineers to buy local and support mom and pop shops.
2.) Protect our parks and support our schools. When we protect our kids and make our school district even better, we ensure Mt. Vernon continues to be the best place to raise a family.
3.) Nip wasteful spending in the bud and focus on reducing deferred maintenance costs on family vehicles by fixing our potholes and keeping our streets and sidewalks clean.
