School officials plan open-air event in hopes of maintaining social distancing
The graduating class of 2020 has already been through an abundance of change during their last year as students, and the changes keep coming.
Due to social distancing requirements set forth by the Lawrence County Health Department, Mt. Vernon graduation ceremonies will look different this year, as they will be held outside at Mt’neer Stadium, weather permitting, Thursday, June 11.
Each graduate will receive six tickets to disperse as they’d like. Children under the age of six years old will not require a ticket, as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
The ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. and ticket holders will be allowed to enter the stadium beginning at 6 p.m. and will be seated in the home bleachers.
General admission for non-ticket holders will begin at 6:30 p.m. and those without tickets are asked to sit in the visitor bleachers, or outside the track during the ceremony. Those sitting along the fence line are encouraged to bring their own seating.
At the conclusion of the event, everyone is welcome to join the graduates on the field, but are asked to respect others and maintain responsible social distancing.
Handicap seating and wheelchair access will be available in the home bleachers for ticket holders. There will also be seating on the track to the left and right of the graduates for those who are disabled and either don’t have a ticket or are unable to negotiate the ramp. Wheelchair service will also be provided for those who need assistance. If you have a friend or family member that will require these services, you can contact Muerita Scrivner at
In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the gymnasium and, due to social distancing guidelines, only ticket holders will be allowed to attend. Time of ceremony will stay the same.
