2018 Record: 11-12
Players Lost to Graduation: Chance Fenton, Ty Boswell, Jayden Buttram and Ethan Johnston.
Returning Players: Will Boswell, Colby Johnston, Quinn Price, Cale Miller, Patrick Lester, Toby Huver, Zach Jones, Arthur Henry and Tresten Shipman.
Outlook: After a disappointing season record-wise, a team that fielded seven sophomores in 2018 now considers itself experienced and ready to contend for both a conference championship and a deep run in the district and state playoffs. The Mt’neers finished second in the Big 8 Conference last year behind eventual state champion Aurora, winning six of seven conference games. That stat alone bodes well for the boys in green as they begin 2019.
Worth Noting: Two strengths for Mt. Vernon in 2019 will be pitching and defense. Mt. Vernon head coach Nick Swillum says this might be the best defensive team he has coached and the pitching staff looks deep, with over two-thirds of the roster listed as pitching possibilities.
