Mt. Vernon football knocks off Monett Cubs in wild one

The Mt. Vernon high school football team hosted Monett on Friday, Oct. 24 and was able to pull off the 50-42 victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Cubs put up 20 points in the second quarter to take a 20-12 halftime lead. A 27-point third quarter by the Mt’neers cut the Monett lead to 36-29. Mt. Vernon added 11 more points in the fourth quarter to take the game by eight points.
Hunter Dawson finished the game 19-26 for 285 yards and two touchdowns, Hunter Conway had 104 yards on 21 carries, and two touchdowns and Coy Felton had 151 yards receiving on nine catches and a touchdown.
“What a game,” said head coach Tom Cox. “It was much like last year; except we flipped the outcome. The guys played hard, and Jakai Krueger made the play of the night with his interception in the end zone to secure the victory.”
Mt. Vernon is now 5-4 on the season and finished third in the Class 3, District 6 standings with 37.75 points and will take on Aurora in an opening round of the district tournament this Friday.
“We will host Aurora in a rematch of week one,” said Cox. “It should be another nailbiter. It always is when these two teams play.”
Seneca finished first in the district with 49.56 points, followed by Cassville (40.03), Mt. Vernon, Hollister (35.79), Aurora (23.03), East Newton (21.50) and Reeds Spring (16.92).

Volleyball
The Lady Mt’neers are your 2025 Class 3, District 12 champions after knocking off Monett at home on Saturday, Oct. 25 in three sets, 25-15, 25-11 and 25-14.
Camryn Cornell led with 23 kills, Ziah Schmutz led with 25 assists and added 21 kills, Ruth Fish had 19 assists, Averee Swillum kicked in 21 digs and Savannah Dampf ended the game with five kills and two blocks.
Mt. Vernon reached the championship game by defeating Cassville in three sets in the semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 23, 25-15, 25-11 and 25-14.
Schmutz led with 12 kills and had 13 assists, Swillum had 17 digs, Fish led with 15 assists and Cornell added eight kills.
The Lady Mt’neers are currently 23-7-2 and were scheduled to play against Liberty Mountain View in the Class 3 sectional round of the state volleyball tournament tomorrow night.
