Mt. Vernon football defeats Parkview on Vikings home turf

Lady Mt’neer volleyball pick up two more wins, looks for more against Carthage, Seneca, Branson
 
The Mt. Vernon High School football team traveled to Springfield on Friday, Oct. 10 to take on and defeat Parkview 21-7.
The Mt’neers got the scoring started in the first quarter when Coy Felton intercepted the ball one-handed and returned it 67 yards for the score and an early Mt. Vernon 7-0 lead. After the Vikings tied the game at 7-7, Hunter Dawson hit Felton on a 45-yard pass to give Mt. Vernon the 14-7 lead at the half.
The Mt’neers added their third touchdown of the game, and Felton‚Äôs third score on a seven-yard pass from Dawson. Defense was the theme in the fourth quarter as neither team could find the end zone and the Mt’neers would cruise to the 21-7 victory.
Dawson was 13-for-16 for 176 yards and two touchdowns; Hunter Conway led with 88 yards on 27 carries and Felton had 127 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns.
“This was a very good win over a Class 5 school with some excellent players,” said Head Coach Tom Cox. “Our guys played extremely hard from start to finish. We look forward to returning to Mt’neer Stadium for our final two regular season games.”
With the win Mt. Vernon is now 3-4 on the season and will host Nevada this Friday night. Seneca leads the Class 3, District 6 standings with 53.90 points, followed by; Cassville (38.19), Mt. Vernon (33.19), Hollister (32.57), Aurora (25.52), East Newton (22.19) and Reeds Spring (17.38).

Volleyball
The Lady Mt’neers volleyball team traveled to Cassville on Thursday, Oct. 9 and won in three sets 25-15, 25-5 and 25-15.
Earlier in the week, Mt. Vernon hosted Aurora on Tuesday, oct. 7 and won in three sets, 25-7, 25-16 and 25-8. Ziah Schmutz had 15 kills and 10 assists, Camryn Cornell had 11 kills and nine digs and Averee Swillum ended the game with 11 digs and seven aces.
“We are excited about where we are playing at this point of the season,” said Head Coach Bridgett Schmutz. “Hard to believe it’s the last week of the regular season but if everyone can be at their best we can keep playing for several more weeks.”
Mt. Vernon is 19-6-2 on the season and were scheduled to travel to Carthage on Monday night before hosting Seneca last night and then traveling to Branson tomorrow night.
