Mt’neers baseball goes 4-0 last week, Emily Schubert throws back-to-back shut outs


The Mt. Vernon High School baseball team had a good week last week, playing three games and winning all three games.
The Mt’neers traveled to Marionville on Friday, May 8 and defeated the Comets 4-3.
Neither team scored for the first two innings until Marionville added a run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead in the game. The Mt’neers answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Comets came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to retake the lead 3-2. In the sixth inning, Keagan Botts scored on a passed ball to tie the game 3-3. A few moments later Cash Garner singled to left field to drive in Landon Wilmoth with what would end up being the winning run.
Wilmoth was 1-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs and Garner went 1-3 with an RBI.
The Mt’neers hosted Hollister on Thursday, May 7 and walked away with a 9-5 win over the Tigers.
Hollister took an early 1-0 lead in the game, but Mt. Vernon tied it up with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mt. Vernon added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Aaden Tennison went 2-3 with a home run, a run scored and four RBIs and Wilmoth was 2-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs.
Mt. Vernon hosted East Newton on Tuesday, May 5, and defeated the Patriots 7-6.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning but East Newton added three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead in the game. The Mt’neers cut into that lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the third inning and two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game 4-4. Both teams scored two runs each in the fifth inning to keep the game tied 6-6. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Botts singled up the middle to drive in Jaden Sexton with the winning run.
Zerrik Pham went 1-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, Brody Wilmoth was 2-3 with an RBI and Botts finished the game 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Mt’neers traveled to Buffalo to begin their week on Monday, May 4 and defeated the Bison 9-8.
Mt. Vernon scored two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning and two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Buffalo scored one run in the second, third and sixth innings, three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning.
Garner was 1-1 with a double and three runs scored and Jax Evans went 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Mt. Vernon is now 13-12 on the season and were scheduled to play at Class 5, 10th ranked Marshfield on Monday before hosting Class 2, second ranked Purdy last night. The Mt’neers will travel to Ozark on Saturday, May 16 to play in their opening round Class 4, District 10 game against Buffalo.
Springfield Catholic is the top seed in the district followed by, Strafford, Bolivar, Mt. Vernon and Buffalo. The tournament is scheduled to run from May 16-19.
The Class 2, second-ranked Mt. Vernon High School softball team defeated Southwest (Washburn) 15-0 in their opening round game of the Class 2, District 6 Tournament on Saturday, May 9 in Sarcoxie.
Softball
The Lady Mt’neers scored 10 runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to close out the scoring for the game.
Hailey Stewart went 2-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs, Jocelyn Liss was 1-3 with three RBIs and Mary Fields went 1-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Emily Schubert pitched her second perfect game of the week, facing just 12 batters, allowing no runs, hits or walks, while striking out nine in the win.
The Lady Mt’neers hosted Reeds Spring on Monday and defeated the Lady Wolves 15-0.
In a short four inning game, Mt. Vernon scored three runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, seven runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning.
Liss was 2-3 with a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs, Schubert went 3-4 with a double and four RBIs and Stewart finished the game 4-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Schubert pitched a perfect game, facing 12 batters, allowing no runs, hits or walks, while striking out all 12 batters she faced.
Mt. Vernon is currently 26-5 on the season and were scheduled to play Class 2, ninth ranked Miller in the Class 2, District 6 semifinals on Monday night. The championship game was to be played lasty night.
