Mary Elaine Wellbaum

Mary Elaine Wellbaum, 70, of Monett, MO, passed away on Saturday morning, June 13, 2020, while at Cox South Medical Center in Springfield, MO.

Mary was born on April 11, 1950 in Monett, MO, daughter of Ernest Eugene Grass and Betty Lou (Nelson) Grass. She began her education in Tulsa, OK and then graduated from Monett High School with the class of 1968. Mary then furthered her education at the Burge School of Nursing where she earned her Degree in Nursing. Mary worked as a Registered Nurse for many area hospitals and nursing homes, retiring from the VA Out Patient Clinic in Mt. Vernon. Beyond the health care that she gave to her patients, Mary built many last relationships with many wonderful people. Mary was a faithful member of the Monett Church of the Nazarene, until her health prevented her from attending. For many years, she praised the Lord as the Church organist. During her life, Mary was always fond of animals, especially her dogs. She was never scared to try anything new and different, including racing dirt track cars, where she had won a race in the Powder Puff Division, and scuba diving. The light of her life was her family, especially her sons and grandchildren.

On November 8, 1969 in Monett, Mary Grass and Gary Wellbaum were united in marriage. To this union, two sons were born.

Mary is survived by her husband, Gary, of the home; her sons, Brandon Wellbaum and wife Nikole and Shelby Wellbaum, all of Monett; her mother, Betty Land, of Monett; four grandchildren, Jeremy Worm, Michael Wellbaum, Tyler Culbertson and Brelynn Wellbaum; sister-in-law, Debbie Stewart and husband Tom and family; and a host of extended family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Grass; one grandson, Gavin Wellbaum; step-father, Bill Land; one brother, Robert Grass;  and several aunts and uncles.

Since her illness has limited her abilities for the last seven years, her family, especially her husband Gary, has been a loving and devoted caregiver to Mary.

Funeral services for Mrs. Wellbaum will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2020 at Buchanan Funeral Home with Reverend Chris Carver officiating. Interment will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Monett. Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Haven of the Ozarks or the Church of the Nazarene in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.
