Mt. Vernon’s arts and recreation center to be sold after 14 years

The city of Mt. Vernon will soon be listing for sale the Mt. Vernon Arts and Recreation Center, 822 W. Mt. Vernon Blvd. The facility officially closed Oct. 20.
Interim city administrator Max Springer said the city decided to sell the building following financial concerns.
“The city has put a lot of money in the MARC, and a lot more needs to be spent on it,” he said. “The city decided that it is time to allow someone else to take it over.”
The sprawling 52,425-square-foot building—a former church—was purchased by the municipality in 2011 and has hosted many gatherings, including meetings, community events, theatrical performances and much more but no longer, said Springer.
The city intends to honor any previous arrangements to use the building up until Dec. 25, according to a notice distributed to affected groups.
The city will begin advertising the building for sale around the beginning of December, said Springer, at which point they will put out a public notice soliciting sealed bids.
