Man suspected of trafficking 14 pounds of meth arrested in sting operation in residence adjacent to Mt. Vernon Middle School

On Tuesday, April 14, James Mangold was arrested after he allegedly received 14 pounds of crystal methamphetamine in the mail at his Mt. Vernon residence. Now, he is facing federal charges stemming from the same incident.
Background of the local drug bust:
In April, the Lawrence County Record reported that members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol found 14 pounds of meth in a parcel being sent to an address on West Sloan, where Mangold, 42, had been observed traveling to since officers began conducting surveillance there in mid- March.
Officers obtained warrants for Mangold’s address and the address to which the parcel was being shipped. An undercover officer delivered the parcel, which at that point contained 60 grams of a representative sample of the crystal substance, to the address at West Sloan.
M a n g o l d came out of the residence and signed for the parcel; immediately afterwards, he was taken into custody, after which a plastic baggie of a crystal substance believed to be meth was located in his pants pocket.
Federal charges:
Mangold is charged with violating federal law by “allegedly knowingly and intentionally attempted to possess, with intent to distribute, 500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine.”
According to an affidavit filed with the federal charges, a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) received a warrant to search the parcel addressed to the house on West Sloan. Opening the parcel, he found an Igloo cooler, inside of which were five bundles of what later field-tested as positive for methamphetamine.
The bundles were placed back into the cooler, which was then put back into the parcel. Another member of the MHSP, also serving as a task force officer with the DEA, delivered the parcel to the address, posing as a delivery person. Mangold allegedly met the officer in the driveway of the residence and signed for the parcel. He was taken into custody afterwards.
 Range of punishment:
If Mangold is convicted to the federal charges, he faces a range of punishment which can include a prison sentence of 10 years, or even life, in federal prison, as well as a $10,000 fine. He is currently being held in the Greene County Jail on behalf of federal marshals.
On the same day that Mangold was arrested, Breanna Maggard, his girlfriend, was arrested at their Olive Street Apartment and charged with first-degree trafficking and possession of a controlled substance. She continues to be held in the custody of the Lawrence County Jail.
