The 2022 volleyball run was another memorable season for volleyball within Lawrence County.
Aurora finished the season with a 9-16-2 record earning the top seed in the Class 3 District 12 tournament.
Mt. Vernon was in an unfamiliar position as one of the youngest teams in the state with no senior starters and just one junior. They caught fire late in the year to finish 17-14-2 and went on to battle with Seneca in for the district championship.
Miller was fresh off the school's first state championship in a girl’s sport after a magical 2021 season. The mantra for the season was “Champions Don’t Rebuild, They Reload.” The Lady Cardinals lived up to the mantra as they went 31-5-2 and was just three points away from capturing their second straight state title.
In result to the three teams’ success, they were very well represented in postseason awards. Fourteen players from the three schools were selected to either an All-Conference or All-District team and five received the ultimate honor of being named to the All-State team.
Starting in Aurora, Kymaran Darnall was the lone representative on the first team All-District team for the Lady Houn's. Jacey Wilcock and Jacey Lee each received second team All-District honors. Darnall was also the lone representative on the loaded All-Big 8 East squad.
Junior Payge Evans, and sophomore Cheyenne Bieber earned first team All-District for the Lady Mt’neers. Fellow sophomore Macie West earned a second team selection, while freshman duo Camryn Cornell and Hali Stokes each earned honorable mention All-District. Bieber earned first team All-Big 8 East as the lone sophomore selected. Evans was selected second team All-Conference as a libero.
Miller dominated the SWC and their six selections to the All-Conference team were well deserved. A senior quartet of Addison Stockton, Emberlynn Kingsley, Haylie Schnake and Lillie Ricketts earned first team honors. Fellow senior Rose Hill and freshman Ashlynn Helton earned second team honors. Coach Tamara Landers was also selected coach of the year and Kingsley was controversially edged out by Stockton’s Summer Kenney as SWC Player of the Year. The Class 1 District 10 team was just as heavily represented by Miller Lady Cardinals as Schnake, Stockton, and Kingsley on first team. Ricketts earned second team honors and Helton received an honorable mention selection.
The All-State teams were announced on Monday and there were several names Lawrence County fans will recognize. As impressive as the Lady Cardinals run was in the postseason, the teams Miller faced from districts on boasted nine selections on the Class 1 team to go along with four selections on their hometown team. Galena had one selection from Miller’s 3-0 sectional win. Drexel also had one selection from Miller's 3-0 sweep in quarterfinals. Winona tied (with Miller) a Class 1 best four All-State selections but fell to the Lady Cardinals in a five set battle in the semifinal game. Finally, state champions Advance claimed three All-Staters on the team to defeat Miller in the championship match.
Five Lawrence County volleyballers earned All-State honors starting with Mt. Vernon’s Cheyenne Bieber, who was one of only three underclassmen selected to the Class 3 team. Stockton, Kingsley, Schnake and Ricketts all earned Class 1 All-State honors.
