Lady Mt'neers win Class 2, District 6 title, Mt'neers knock off Buffalo in district opening game

The Class 2, second ranked Lady Mt'neers softball team are your 2026 Class 2, District 6 champions after defeating Class 2, third ranked East Newton, 6-5 in the championship game of the tournament on Tuesday in Sarcoxie.
Mt. Vernon got on the board first after Hailey Stewart homered in the top of the first inning, to give the lady Mt'neers an early 1-0 lead. A few batters later Jocelyn Liss hit a two-run home run to increase that lead to 3-0 at the end of the first inning.
The Patriots would come back with a single run in the top of the third inning and four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead in the game. In the bottom of the sixth inning with AJ Shipman and Mary Fields on base, Stewart came to bat again and blasted a three-run home run to left field to give Mt. Vernon the 6-5 lead in the game. The Lady Mt'neers would hold East Newton scoreless in the top of the seventh inning to take the game.
Stewart was 2-4 in the game with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBIs and Liss finished the game 2-3 with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs.
Mt. Vernon reached the championship game by defeating Class 2, ninth-ranked Miller 10-0 in the semifinals on Monday.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Mt'neers scored five runs in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning to complete the shutout.
Emily Schubert pitched a great game, allowing just three hits while striking out eight. Stewart was 4-4 with two doubles, a run scored and four RBIs and Schubert finished the game 2-3 with two RBIs.
Mt. Vernon is 28-5 on the season and were scheduled play Clever last night in the quarterfinals of the Class 2 state tournament at home. The semifinals for the state tournament is scheduled for Monday, May 25, with the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, May 26. Both games will be played in Springfield.
Baseball
The Mt. Vernon High School baseball team headed to Ozark on Saturday, May 16 to play Buffalo in an opening round game of the Class 4, District 10 tournament, defeating the Bison 13-4 to advance to the semifinals.
After Buffalo took and early 3-0 lead after the first inning, the Mt'neers answered with a nine-run second inning to pretty much put the game out of the reach with a 9-3 lead. Mt. Vernon would score single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while Buffalo scored their final run in the fifth inning.
Keagan Botts went 2-4 with a run scored and three RBIs, Zerrik Pham was 1-1 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Cash Garner went 1-3 with three runs scored and an RBI and Aaden Tennison finished the game 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Mt'neers hosted Class 2, second ranked Purdy on Tuesday, May 12, but fell to the Eagles 12-0.
Purdy scored three runs in the first inning, two runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning. Mt. Vernon had six hits in the game.
Garner was 2-3 and Jackson Hood finished the game 1-3 with a double.
On Monday, May 11, Mt. Vernon traveled to Class 5, 10th ranked Marshfield but lost to the Blue Jays in a close game, 5-3.
Marshfield led 2-0 after the first inning, but the Mt'neers tied it up with two runs in the top of the second inning. Marshfield answered with a single run in the bottom of the second inning to regain the lead 3-2. The Blue Jays added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 4-2. Mt. Vernon scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Blue Jays picked up their final run in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.
Josh Vernon went 1-1 with a double and an RBI, Jax Evans was 1-4 with an RBI, Landon Wilmoth went 2-3 with a double and Brody Wilmoth finished the game 1-2 with a double and a run scored.
Mt. Vernon is 14-14 on the season and were scheduled to play Springfield Catholic in the semifinals of the district tournament on Monday. The championship game was scheduled for last night.
