Lady Mt'neers pick up three more wins, Mt. Vernon baseball knocks off Cassville 12-5

The Class 2, fifth ranked Lady Mt'neers softball team made the trek up to Kennet on Friday and Saturday to play in three games, winning two of them.

 

On Saturday, April 11, Mt. Vernon defeated Doniphan 4-2, behind an outstanding pitching performance from Emily Schubert.

 

Mt. Vernon scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. The Donnettes answered back with a single run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Doniphan tied it up with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Lady Mt'neers put the game away with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to secure the 4-2 victory.

 

Lisa Stewart was 2-2 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI and Adi Williams went 1-3 with an RBI. Schubert got the win, going seven innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with one walk and eight strike outs.

 

Mt. Vernon lost in a slugfest to Gosnell, Ark. on Friday, April 10, 14-13.

 

The Lady Mt'neers led 4-0 after the top of the first inning but the Lady Pirates scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut that lead to 4-3. Gosnell would add two runs in the bottom of the second inning and one run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-4 lead. A six-run fourth inning by Mt. Vernon gave them a 10-6 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. The lady Pirates scored twice to cut the lead to 10-8. Mt. Vernon answered right back scoring one run in the fifth inning and two runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase their lead to 13-8. Gosnell would not go away quietly, scoring six times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 14-13 lead and then holding on for the one-run victory.

 

Elli Eddington had a monster game, going 3-4 with a home run, two runs scored and seven RBIs, Hailey Stewart was 4-5 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs and Schubert finished the game 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

 

The Lady Mt'neers started Friday by defeating Class 2, third ranked Kennett 12-3.

 

Mt. Vernon scored three runs in the second, third and fifth innings, a single run in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning. The Lady Indians scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

 

Hailey Stewart went 3-5 with a triple and an RBI, AJ Shipman was 1-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, Mary Fields went 2-4 with two runs scored and five RBIa and Lisa Stewart finished the game 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

 

On Thursday, April 9, Mt. Vernon hosted and defeated Southwest (Washburn) 8-1 behind the no-hit pitching of Vanessa Rutherford.

 

The Lady Mt'neers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Lady Trojans scored in the top of the second inning to cut that lead to 2-1. After no one scored for a couple of innings, Mt. Vernon put up a five spot in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Lady Mt'neers would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

 

Jocelyn Liss was 2-3 with a triple and a run scored, Wiliams went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored and Hailey Stewart finished the contest 3-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Rutherford was brilliant, allowing one earned run on no hits with four walks and eight strike outs.

 

Mt. Vernon began their very long week by hosting Class 2, fourth ranked Diamond on Monday, April 8 losing to the Lady Wildcats 8-4.

 

Diamond jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead and then increased that lead to 3-0 by the end of the top of the third inning. The Lady Mt'neers were able to score two runs in the bottom of the third inning and a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game 3-3. The Lady Wildcats added a single run in the top of the fifth inning and two runs ion both the sixth and seventh innings to complete their scoring. Mt. Vernon added a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish up the scoring for the game.

 

Hailey Stewart was 2-2 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI and Liss finished the game 1-3 with a double.

 

The Lady Mt'neers are 14-4 on the season and were scheduled to play against Pierce City on Monday before traveling to Class 2, second ranked East Newton last night, Pea Ridge, ARK tomorrow night and Class 2, seventh ranked Fair Grove on Friday night.

 

Baseball

 

The Mt'neers baseball team hosted Cassville on Thursday night and dispatched the Wildcats with a 12-5 victory.

 

Mt. Vernon led 1-0 after the first inning and 2-1 after the second inning. After Cassville tied the game 2-2, Mt. Vernon scored three times in the bottom of the third inning and four times in the bottom of the fourth inning to begin to pull away. Cassville scored a run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 9-3. Mt. Vernon scored another run in the bottom of the inning to increase their lead to 10-3. Cassville would score single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and the Mt'neers would add two runs in the sixth inning to close out the 12-5 win.

 

Jaden Sexton was 3-4 with a triple, a run scored and three RBIs, Aaden Tennison went 3-4 with a double and two RBIs, Jackson Hood was 1-2 with a double and four RBIs and Keagan Botts finished 2-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

 

The Mt'neers hosted Aurora on Tuesday night but lost to Houn Dawgs 10-1.

 

Aurora led 2-1 after the first inning but then added three runs in the third inning, two runs in the fourth and sixth innings and a single run in the seventh inning to secure the win.

 

Sexton went 1-2 with a triple, and Hood was 1-4.

 

Mt. Vernon is 5-7 on the season and were scheduled to play at Parkview on Monday and Class 4, eighth ranked Nevada last night before hosting Seneca last night and going to Hillcrest on Friday night.
