Lady Mt’neer softball picks up 21st win, Mt’neer baseball scores 20 against Parkview

The Class 2, second ranked Mt. Vernon High School softball team traveled to Adrian on Wednesday, April 22 and played in the Adrian Softball Tournament.

 

Against Class 2, top ranked Skyline, the Lady Mt’neers fell to the Lady Tigers 1-0.

 

Mt. Vernon defeated Concordia earlier in the day, 12-3. The Lady Mt’neers scored five runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning, one run in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning. The Orioles scored three runs in the seventh inning.

 

Lisa Stewart went 3-4 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs and AJ Shipman was 1-2 with a run scored and two RBIs.

 

The Lady Mt’neers opened the tournament by defeating Butler 9-0. Mt. Vernon scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning.

 

Emily Schubert went 2-2 with a double and two RBIs, Shipman was 2-2 with a double and two runs scored and Elli Eddington finished 1-3 with two RBIs.

 

The Lady Mt’neers traveled to Riverton, Kan. on Tuesday, April 21 and came home with a 13-3 win.

 

Mt. Vernon scored five runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning, five runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning.

 

Hailey Stewart was 3-4 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and an RBI, Schubert went 2-4 with four RBIs, Mya Bray was 2-3 with two RBIs and Shipman went 1-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

 

Mt. Vernon began the week by traveling to Sarcoxie on Monday, April 20 and defeated the Lady Bears 11-1.

 

The Lady Mt’neers scored three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Sarcoxie scored one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Mt. Vernon scored our runs in the top of the third inning to increase their lead to 7-1 and then added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to finish out the scoring.

 

Jocelyn Liss was 1-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs, Lilly Burk went 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI, Hailey Stewart was 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, Lisa Stewart went 3-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, and Mary Fields was 1-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Schubert got the win, going five innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

 

Mt. Vernon is 21-5 on the season and were scheduled to play at Strafford on Monday before hosting Clever last night and Lighthouse Sr. High before heading to Frontenac, Kan. on Friday night.

 

Baseball

 

The Mt’neers hosted Mountain Grove on Saturday, April 25 and came away with a 5-4 win over the Panthers.

 

Mountain Grove took an early 2-0 lead in the game; Mt. Vernon cut the lead to 2-1 after the second inning. The Mt’neers scored another run in the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2. The Panthers added two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. A single run by Mt. Vernon cut the lead to 4-3. The Mt’neers walked off the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Keagan Botts singled to left field driving in Jaden Sexton and Zerrick Pham with the game winner.

 

Botts went 1-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, Pham was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Cash Garn er went 1-4 with an RBI and Jax Evans was 1-2 with an RBI.

 

The Mt’neers traveled to McDonald County on Thursday, April 23 and came home with a 5-4 loss.

 

Mt. Vernon led 2-1 after the first inning but then McDonald County scored two runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Mt. Vernon scored two more runs in the seventh inning but fell a run short.

 

Brody Wilmoth was 1-2 with a double and three RBIs and Aaden Tennison finished the game 1-4 with an RBI.

 

On Tuesday, the Mt’neers hosted West Plains but lost to the Zizzers 7-6.

 

Mt. Vernon scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. West Plains scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Mt’neers scored two runs to increase their lead to 6-2. The Zizzers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and two runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the game 7-6.

 

Sexton went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs and Pham was 1-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

 

Mt. Vernon started the week by traveling to Springfield and defeating Parkview 20-0 on Monday.

 

The Mt’neers scored one run in the first inning, eight runs in the second inning, one run in the third and fourth innings and nine runs in the fifth inning to compete the shut out.

 

Jackson Hood was 1-3 with a triple and two runs scored, Tennison went 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs, Evans was 2-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, Jensen Swihart went 1-1 with a double, a run scored and four RBIs and Landon Wilmoth finished the game 1-1 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs.

 

Mt. Vernon is now 8-11 on the season and were scheduled to play at Forsyth on Monday and Lamar last night before ending the week at Monett tomorrow night.
