Joann Julia Schmidt

Joann Julia Schmidt, 83, of Mt. Vernon passed away Dec. 13, 2019, at the Cox South Hospital in Springfield. She was born Feb. 17, 1936, in St. Ignace, Mich., to Lawrence and Bernetta (Burton) Soeltner.
Schmidt worked as an administrative assistant for a credit union and was a member of the St. Susanne Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. In 1954, she married Leroy James Schmidt, in Moran, Mich.; he preceded her in death in 2015.
Schmidt is survived by: daughter, Kristina (Darin) Estes of Republic; sons, Tim Schmidt and Steve Heady of St. Louis, and Larry (Diane) Schmidt of Pacific; brother, Tom (Pat) Soeltner of Rudyard, Mich.; sister, Linda (Charles) Orr of Moran, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Schmidt was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; daughters, Laura Dahl and Margaret Schmidt; son, Michael Schmidt; sister, Jean Sheber; and brother, Richard Soeltner.
A visitation, under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, in Mt. Vernon, was held Dec. 20, 2019, with a funeral mass that followed at the St. Susanne Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. Burial followed at the veterans cemetery in Springfield. Memorials may be made payable to St. Susanne Catholic Church, in care of the funeral home.
