Harrington to be next city administrator for Mt. Vernon

The Mt. Vernon Board of Aldermen announced Oct. 23 the hiring of Robert Harrington as the new city administrator for the City of Mount Vernon.
Harrington was among 18 candidates that applied for the position. The aldermen conducted interviews at two special meetings and made the selection after careful consideration of all qualifications of each candidate.
Harrington reportedly has a strong background in economic development and has worked in community and economic development for 18 years. His education includes a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, additionally he has certification as a Master Practitioner of Economic Development. Most recently, he has been working as the Economic Development Director for Bourbon County (Kansas) REDI and running the business he started, Rural Growth Strategies.
Harrington currently resides in Fort Scott, Kan. with his wife and four children. He will begin his duties at Mt. Vernon on Nov. 17.
Interim City Administrator Max Springer will assist the city through this transition process. Springer has been very dedicated to Mt. Vernon for many years and his leadership through these last few months has been highly valuable. The board expressed gratitude for his service to the city.
