Carmen Genevieve Roy

Second Lieutenant Army nurse Carmen Genevieve Roy, 99, passed away peacefully March 23, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was an active resident at the Mt. Vernon Veterans home for over nine years. She was born in Lake Mills Iowa, to parents Christian and Julia Bredeson.
She was a high school graduate from the class of 1940, from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn. She then went onto nursing school to graduate in 1944 from the Norwegian American Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, Ill. She then enlisted in the Army nurse training program in Camp Carson, Colo. Upon completion, she returned home and had a lifetime career in nursing. She was stationed at the O’Reilly General Military Hospital in Springfield. She was a nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Monett, as well as cared for patients at the Mt. Vernon Chest Hospital. She also filled the role of school nurse at Pierce City Schools for nearly 10 years.
She is survived by: daughter, Corinne (Kenneth) O’Hara of Pierce City; two sons; sister, Ruth Knudson of Temple, Texas; four grandkids; five great-grandkids of Pierce City. She was preceded in death by: sister, Agnes Hoel; brother, Clemens Bredeson.
A celebration of life service will be held on June 6, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, in Sarcoxie. Celebration of life and service arrangements are through Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City.
