MoDOT announced they will complete the Highway 39 overpass before Thanksgiving, if the weather cooperates.
According to information provided on the MoDOT website, Highway 39 near Carnation Drive in Aurora is currently closed “while the contractor installs a new culvert at Chat Creek and connect Route 39 to the new bridge over the BNSF tracks, including installing guardrail, final paving and striping.”
The stretch of highway will reopen as soon as Wed., Nov. 27, if there are no delays due to weather. Earlier this month, contractor crews closed the railroad crossing at Route K/Elliott Avenue while they completed improvements to the crossing, including installing sidewalks, pedestrian gates and a median barrier. After that work was completed, the crossings at Morgan and McNatt were closed.
The MoDOT posting stated that once the project is complete, the city will apply to the Federal Railroad Administration to establish a quiet zone for the railway in Aurora. If the quiet zone is established, trains will no longer sound their warning horns when traveling between Highway 39 and Elliott Street.
